Top Tips to Reduce Your Shopping Bill

We all give in to the impulses of shopping aisles every now and then, but here are a few pointers to help keep you (and your wallet!) happy.

Plan your meals

The most important step in keeping costs down is to plan your week’s meals ahead of time, rather than end up tempted by the lure of a takeaway when inspiration has left you and you’re too tired to make any effort.

Always go with a list

Tried and tested, this tip is always the best option. If you go without, you may as well be donating your money to the supermarket, as you will undoubtedly get distracted by special offers and end up buying far more than you need or want.

Don’t go when you’re hungry

Always a trap – you’ll end up with a trolley full of sugar!

Have a budget

Know exactly how much you want to spend – and stick to it!

Keep a list on your fridge

As things run out or you discover you need them, write them on the list in plan view so that you don’t forget when it comes time to do the shopping.

Make a store cupboard checklist

Keep a checklist of everything you have in your store cupboard. As it runs out, check it off and add it to the list on the fridge.

Buy in bulk, but only when it makes sense

If you can save money on something you already buy in bulk, then this is a great idea – but don’t give in to special offers unless they have value for you as you will only end up wasting what you don’t use.

Keep stocked up on frozen veggies

The essential freezer staple, these will provide much needed nutrients in a pinch – and they keep miles longer than the fresh equivalent, meaning you always have a tasty addition for dinner on hand!

Have meat-free Monday!

Not only is meat expensive to eat all the time, it’s good for the family to take a break from meat-eating at least once a week. Plus, this will encourage you all to try out some new dishes!

Embrace the leftover

Re-educate your family about leftovers, and show them that not only are they delicious, but they form the basis of some truly amazing meals!

Clip the coupon

Now more than ever, we need to embrace the coupon. Clip them when you see them and keep them in your wallet so that you have them to hand in the supermarket.

Go ‘own brand’

Often, just as delicious as branded products – give them a try and find the ones you and your family love.

Forget the sugary cereal

Bad for you, bad for your family, bad for your wallet.

Invest in mince

Minced beef is good value, versatile and can be stretched to make budget-friendly meals the whole family will love.
